Day-care facility for people with dementia in Bad Bergzabern

A good life in old age

A good life in old age Many relatives must realize that - with increasing duration - taking care of dementia patients can hardly be managed.

Now relatives get professional care support in Bad Bergzabern. In Danzigerstraße 29 the Pfalzklinikum runs the first day-care facility of the region specialized in dementia.

The day-care facility offers twenty spaces for day patients. Care is available seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or as agreed upon. It is also possible to get short-term care for special days or a couple of hours. Meals are always included. The cost of the stay can be paid for by the care insurance fund. For this purpose, the day-care facility team offers comprehensive counselling. Rita Becker-Scharwatz still accepts registrations for the day-care facility in Bad Bergzabern. It is also possible to arrange a "taster day". In addition, relatives get a situational consultation regarding handling possibilities at home.

The conception of the day-care facility in Bad Bergzabern has been developed in cooperation with the departments of Neurology, Geriatric Psychiatry and the facility "Care-Foster-Live" of the Pfalzklinikum. The objective is to maintain and foster the skills and abilities of the dementia patients for every-day life. The day patients are looked after and fostered by ten specialists trained in the fields of health care and nursing, care of the elderly, gerontology (the science of aging), supporting and comforting of dementia patients and occupational therapy. It is of particular importance that the team includes an occupational therapist. This enables the patients to continue to practice various practical skills such as working with wood or fabric, things which the elder people have often loved to do during their whole lives.

The offers comprise biographical work, memory work, several training courses, aroma care and leisure activities. For persons suffering from dementia before having reached the retirement age and thus being comparatively young there is a special offer aiming at training movements and memory performance (cognition). All employees are guided by the findings of gerontology, nursing science, pedagogy and psychology. The day-care facility is co-operating with the Institute of Gerontology of the University of Heidelberg.

The new day-care facility in Bad Bergzabern lies directly at the foot of the vineyards in the immediate surroundings of the hospital. Its equipment is state-of-the-art. For example the day patients can benefit from a chill-out room with armchairs, a memory room, a room for occupational therapy and a group room for movement exercises. On demand, a transport service can be organized.

The day-care facility was inaugurated on January 16, 2012.
Registrations are still possible.
